Polly Diana Boone Hickman

Polly Diana Boone was born on March 16, 1943 in Olympia, WA to Donald Jess and Beatrice Burntrager Boone while Don served in the Pacific as a naval radioman during World War II. In 2010, Polly was diagnosed with 2 different breast cancers and in May of 2013 was proclaimed cancer free. Then in mid-July she was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer that had metastasized from her earlier breast cancer. She lost her battle at the Franciscan Hospice House on November 4, 2013.

Growing up where the Latin Farm is located in East Olympia, Polly moved into town and graduated with the Olympia High School class of 1961. While attending Centralia Community College she met the love of her life, a transplanted Wyoming pharmacist, John W. Hickman. They were married 49 years ago at St John's Episcopal Church in Olympia, WA, June 13, 1964. Polly completed her Music Education degree at the University of Puget Sound. She enjoyed her time singing with the Adelphian Concert Choir, including a tour to England and Ireland in 1965 that included John.

A move to University Place in 1968, where Andrew John (Helen)1968 and Elizabeth Adele Anderson 1970 joined the family, became her permanent home. Polly was a member of St Andrew's Episcopal Church for the past 45 years and sang in the choir and played in the bell choir over those years. She was a PTA president and Golden Acorn recipient. Polly began volunteering her time to assist with the University Place String Program at Sunset Elementary when Andrew and Beth were in the program. An active Pharmacy Auxiliary member, she was both Pierce County and State WSPA Auxiliary president.

She especially enjoyed her PEO Sisterhood years taking on the Treasurer and President position for a time. Her neighborhood book club made her an avid reader and gave her many opportunities to spend memorable moments with her friends.

Polly worked for a few years as a bookkeeper for H&P Drug Center and Barbecue Pete's Restaurants. She was a church bookkeeper and finance committee member at St Andrew's for a number of years as well.

Vacations were spent for many years on family travels to Wyoming and Montana to visit John's family. More recently, travel was to the west coast condos that Polly and John shared.

Many pleasant TV hours were spent watching the Mariners, Seahawks, favorite college teams, or her evening TV menu as she cross-stitched so many memorable creations. Polly spent hours doing genealogy for the Boone, Burntrager, Barkley and Hickman families, keeping impeccable records. She was a Thurstoneer as her relatives have lived in Thurston County since 1852, when the area was a territory.

When you think of Polly you also think of barn paintings, miniatures, roses, bassets (especially Sadie), music, walking on the beach, reading on her kindle, or doing counted cross-stitch.

A perfect evening for Polly was watching her granddaughter perform in a theatrical musical, seeing her grandsons display their talents on the trumpet or trombone, capturing pictures of a sunset at one of her condos, or enjoying dining out with John.

Her father, Don, preceded her in death in 2007. Other family members who mourn her passing are grandchildren Ian Anderson (Boise, ID), Thomas Anderson (Fircrest), Shelby Hickman (Orting); her mother Beatrice Boone (Olympia); brother Steve (Joan) Boone (Olympia); nieces Alison Lawson (Olympia), Angie (Casey) Corcoran (Rochester); and Lane (Laurie) Boyce (Sidney, MT). In addition are several cousins and a host of friends who will miss her smile at future gatherings.

Rest in Peace, Polly!

Services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (S 12th and Jackson in Tacoma) at 3:00pm. Please remember Polly by supporting St. Andrew's, cancer research, or the charity of your choice.
