Obituary for Christopher Lynn Caldwell

Christopher L. Caldwell of Longbranch Washington died at his home on August 22, 2017 at the age of 71. Chris was born September 27, 1945 to Charles E. and Natalie Clark Caldwell in Newport Rhode Island. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Constance Carol Noble and Faye Natalie Ubele, one niece Katrina Hiltz and one nephew Karl Hiltz.
Chris graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery Alabama and then joined the Navy in October 1965, graduated boot camp in San Diego DEC 1, 1965, then Chris spent 4 years 10 months and 15 days in Foreign and/or Sea Service before receiving his Honorable Discharge on the USS BORIE DD704 in Alexandria Virginia in October of 1971 with Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals.
After leaving the navy he worked a few jobs until he went to work for NOAA where he became a Chief Marine Engineer, Chris spent most of his sea time with NOAA in Alaska, Hawaii, and the West Coast.
After about 10 years of working for NOAA Chris took a break and did some traveling and played with his hobby of wildlife photography. Later he went to work for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma Washington where he worked as an Operating Engineer, IUOE Local 286. And retired after about 17 years.
In 1992 Chris and his best friend Jody Pflugrad built a house in Longbranch Washington on 10 acres which they had bought a few years earlier and they had been using it for camping between their boat trips with NOAA. Chris and Jody resided there until his death. Chris and Jody were married in Idaho in 2003. In 2002 Chris was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and the University of Washington Medical Center. And the Cardiac Care Unit should be given all of the credit for keeping Chris alive for these “extra” 15 years that we had with him. At the time of his death Chris was being cared for by Jody with the help and guidance of the Franciscan Hospice Group.
Chris liked to ride his motorcycles, he had several over the many years, he liked driving his tractor and making roads all over the Longbranch property, he liked driving his jeep up in the mountains looking for places to pan for gold, find agates, opals and crystals. He also liked planning trips to take in his RV, at the time of his death he was making plans to go to Arkansas and look for diamonds. Chris’s other main hobby was cameras, he liked taking wildlife pictures and pictures of where ever he was and whatever he was doing, he had a dark room set up for developing 35mm slide film and then making them into prints, and making enlargements of some of his photos. Then when the new cameras came out with the chips in them (no film) he learned about them pretty quick, he was very creative with the computer programs and made some amazing pictures. Chris is survived by his loving wife/best friend Jody, several family members including nieces Sharon Noble Oliver of Adairsville Georgia, Lynn Miller of Clemson South Carolina. Kendall Gilchrist (Stephen) of Alabama, Joanna Madrigal (Caleb) of Montana, Laura Snyder (Nick), and Natalie Pflugrad all of Washington. Nephews Brad Noble of Hogansville Georgia, Dr. William Hiltz of Silverdale WA. Ian Madrigal of California, David Pflugrad of Texas. Sister in laws Wendy Madrigal of Arizona, Leslie Sanders (David) of Idaho and brother in law Kris Pflugrad (Joyce) of Washigton and 15 great nieces and nephews.
