Obituary for Daniel Hugh O'Donnell

Daniel H. O’Donnell passed away ten days following his 57th birthday on Saturday, 08/26/2017, in Lakewood, Washington. He fought his battle against cancer for three years never giving up until he finally succumbed in peace. His wishes were to be at home with his boys, and we were all blessed that his wishes were granted.

Daniel is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda (Meckes), and his beloved two sons—John W. O’Donnell and Matthew S. O’Donnell.

He was born in Madrid, Spain, but he grew up with his five surviving siblings—Susan San Pedro, Mary O’Donnell, Elizabeth O’Donnell, Theresa O’Donnell and his brother John Moore O’Donnell—in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

His 20 years in the U.S. Army took him to around the globe—Korea; Honduras; West Berlin, Germany—we were there when the wall came down; Wurzburg, Germany—and stateside, he was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, California and had two assignments at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was a model soldier, expert marksman and was awarded the Best Supply Room while at Fort Lewis three quarters in row. General “Stormin” Norman Schwarzkopf presented him with a Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) award for the best supply room in the U.S. Army.

As a youngster, Daniel meticulously built and flew line-controlled model airplanes and had acquired quite a collection to keep him busy in retirement. He had a passion for golf and cooked like a scientist creating and perfecting his own recipes and methods. His specialties were steak and ribs. He had dreams of creating his own wood shop and amassed so many tools that they nearly took over the garage. Upon retiring from military service, he earned his Associate’s Degree in Arts and Sciences from Tacoma Community College and the President’s Medal with a nearly perfect GPA.

Most important to Daniel was providing for the safety and security of his family and maintaining a peaceful, loving family life. He was happiest sharing family time over a great meal or even a simple cup of coffee in the morning. His empathy, his compassion, his strength of will and character along with his total devotion to his wife and family, his exceptional work ethic (we called him the White Tornado because he could clean up the whole house and leave it in immaculate condition in such a short period of time!), his endurance, his sense of humor, his faith, the respect, protection and unending support Daniel had for his wife are all part of his legacy.

Military service is to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Tahoma National Cemetery. 18600 SE 240th St, Kent, WA 98042

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to support organizations whose research focuses on research for cancer cures, heart disease, any Veteran’s assistance group or to a charity of your choosing.
