Obituary for Edith Dee Ficek

Edith Dee Ficek

Edith “Edie” Dee Ficek was born in Seattle on December 2, 1949, the youngest of five children born to Byron and Faith Nash. She passed from this life on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Tacoma due to a recently diagnosed lung condition; Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.

Edie grew up in West Seattle, graduating from West Seattle High School in 1968. After graduation, she found a job working split shift at a candy shop before being noticed and referred, by a customer, to apply at what was then Pacific Northwest Bell. Edie began at the phone company as an operator, and thirty-eight years later, retired from Qwest as a well-respected technician dispatcher, having received multiple President’s Club awards for excellence within the company.

Edie met the love of her life, Eugene Ficek, at West Seattle Bowl, eyeing each other from across the way, as they bowled in a weekly league. Gene and his brother, Ray, helped Edie to perfect her skills so that she eventually became one of the best women bowlers in Washington state. On March 17, 1973, surrounded by family and friends, they were wed at Holy Rosary Church in West Seattle. Their passion for bowling continued throughout much of their over forty-five years together, as well as countless hobbies they enjoyed together up to present day, including camping, fishing, and traveling in the great outdoors.

Edie was best known for her optimistic, kindhearted, and gracious nature. She was a friend to all and a confidant to many. I think all would agree, she was a woman with the heart of an angel. She has left us remembering her beautiful laugh and the way she simply glowed, exuding her positivity; the care she took to remember each and every one of our birthdays, anniversaries, and special life moments, commemorating them with nothing but the very best from Hallmark; the way she would decorate every little nook and cranny come Christmas; her feisty spirit as she rooted for “her” Hawks; the love, joy and fulfilment she found in being a grandparent; and who could forget her wonders from the kitchen - the world’s best macaroni salad, ribs, salsa and beans. The list could go on and on . . .

Edie Ficek is survived by her husband, Gene; son, Joshua; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Sary, and their children, Felicia, Ariel, Erica, Alexander, Madison, and Kaitlyn; and the many others in her extended network of close family and friends. She will be loved always, never forgotten, forever missed.

A memorial service will be held in Edie’s honor on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Stephen the Martyr in Renton, with a luncheon and gathering of fellowship to follow.
