Obituary for Josephine Jastad

JOSEPHINE JASTAD
Jo was born on December 21, 1915 in Minneapolis to Polish immigrants Sophia and Joseph Targus. She was the 5th of 6 siblings in their family. She died peacefully at her home at Bridgeport Place on November 9, 2017.
Her family moved west shortly after her birth and settled in Pe Ell, Washington, where she grew up in a vibrant community of other Poles. Josie, to her young friends, loved school and sports, playing basketball and being on the honor roll. She was somewhat of a tom boy enjoying the outdoors, as well.
She met her future husband Martin Jastad after graduation from high school while working at her soon to be brother in law's pharmacy in Pe Ell. She was always had stories to tell about her job working there and her interest in the science of pharmacy. She and Martin were married on December 26, 1935. They celebrated 57 years until his death in 1992. With his work in the logging industry, they spent some time apart but she eventually moved to the Lindberg logging camp in Mineral, Washington with him, where she was the only woman. There were lots of stories about that, too. They then moved to Tacoma, where their first daughter Roberta was born. Then it was on to Morton, Washington where their second daughter Suzie was born. Chehalis, Washington was their next home, where they lived for 15 years. She was a busy woman raising her girls, being a housewife, going to church and socializing with a wide group of friends. They and their friends had many good times around the piano, boating, digging clams and such. She even taught herself to play golf with the help of a book by Ben Hogan. The move to Tacoma in 1959 would be her last, and she dug right into that, meeting many new friends and making a home for her family, once again. She continued her golf at Tacoma Country and Golf Club, where she eventually won the Women's Championship one year and was runner up several times.
She and Martin had many adventures during their time together with lots of travel and lots of friends. They took trips through the Panama Canal, Reno, Hawaii, Europe, South America and around the USA including yearly jaunts to Palm Springs.
An ardent fan of the Huskies and the Seahawks she would always coach them to "go wide".
And how she loved her family, her church and her beloved game of golf. She never met a stranger and we said she always did her best visiting at Safeway, where she could be seen with her silver ponytail and a ribbon, of course, and maybe buying a lottery ticket or two! Her work with Mary Bridge Children's Hospital was instrumental in starting the Sacajawea Guild in Chehalis in the 50's and she continued that being a member of the Century Guild in Lakewood.
Preceded in death by her husband Martin, her beloved grandson Chris Steele and her siblings, remembering her are her daughters, Roberta Steele (Darrell) and Suzie Hostetter (Tom), her granddaughters Leslie Tomala (Lance) and Evan Wight, her two great grandchildren Rhys and Maddie Tomala along with Melissa Steele, Roberta and Darrell's daughter in law. She also leaves behind many adored nieces and nephews, who called her their Aunt Filly, wonderful church friends and special golf pals.
We remember her as always loving as she was always loved. We give thanks and gratitude to the wonderful staff at Bridgeport Place for their years of caring for her and loving her. We mourn her passing, but celebrate a life well lived. A spiritual and gracious woman, she was. Way to go, Mom!
Services for her will be held on Wednesday, November 22 at 11am at St Mary's Episcopal Church, 10630 Gravelly Lake Drive, Lakewood.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital or St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
