Obituary for Marcia Ann Merritt

Marcia Ann Merritt lost her courageous battle with lung cancer Nov. 30 surrounded by friends. She was 60.

Born March 18, 1958, in Darrington, WA to parents James C. Merritt and Marjorie Cowlin Merritt, Marcia’s early life was spent in the woods. Even after moving to King Mountain near Bellingham, WA at age 5, she continued her life-long love of the outdoors, especially skiing. A precocious and social child, Marcia was always well-known by neighbors, her Masonic family, and the Scottish community. Music was important, especially Scottish music, and she grew up playing the bagpipes, dancing in the Highland Games, and singing. It was clear at an early age that Marcia had a special gift for singing and her chiming voice was always a part of high school musicals and Jobs Daughters ceremonies.

After graduating from Bellingham High School in 1976, she briefly worked for St. Luke’s Hospital in Bellingham before moving to Seattle and spending more than 10 years working for the U.S. Forest Service. In 1989, she moved to Lacey, WA and worked reviewing long-term disability claims for a private firm. In 1992, Marcia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and retired shortly after that. Though her illness rendered her mostly homebound, her door was always open and she served as a trusted confidant and supporter of her many friends.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves behind sister Carol M. Walton of Billings, MT, brother James D. Merritt of Bearsville, NY; nieces Alicia Jago, Nora Meier, Nina Merritt and Emily Merritt; five great nieces and nephews Ellie and Rebecca Jago, Caleb, Juliet and Logan Meier; and step-mother Marjie Martin Merritt of Anacortes, WA.

The family wishes to thank Joann for her selfless care of Marcia during her final days.

A Celebration of Life for Marica will be held at 3 p.m., Sat., Dec. 15 at her home, 7117 Alderwood Ct. SE, Lacey, WA.. Memorials in her name may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society.
