Obituary for Susan Ann Bentley

In Loving Memory of
SUSAN ANN OLSEN BENTLEY

SUSAN OLSEN BENTLEY ( Major U.S. Army. Nurse Corp, Ret.) of University Place died peacefully at home on January 17, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. Susan was born in Brooklyn, New York , a second generation American surrounded by a Ukrainian-Norwegian extended family, rich with customs and a heritage of which she was extremely proud. Susan attended Middlesex Nursing School in Connecticut, and joined the U.S Army Nurse Corps shortly after. She retired after 20 years, during which she served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam during the height of conflict. She met her future husband while stationed in Italy.
Susan was predeceased by her parents, Ole Edward Olsen, and Anastasia (Nellie) Kutz Olsen of East Lyme, Connecticut, and her loving husband, Dr. Gerard Anthony Bentley, (Col. U S Army, ret.). She is survived by her brother, George E. Olsen (Eleanor) of Virginia Beach, Virginia and their children, Michael Olsen, Valerie Reid (Scott), and Geoffrey (Heidi) and by her husband, Tony’s, daughters, Tanya Marie Brown (Derreyl) of Rockford, Illinois and Tina Marie Bentley of Dallas, Texas. She leaves behind many children of the next Olsen and Bentley generations whom she loved and may inspire with her story.

Susan and Tony traveled during their military careers, and enjoyed collecting artifacts and mementoes of their travels and other interests. Everyone who knew her knew that Susan loved the art work of Rie Muñoz of Alaska. She also enjoyed birdwatching, was an avid reader, and a loving and indulgent pet owner.

Her family and friends will miss her, but take comfort in knowing she was loved and cared for by many and that she knew this.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at Edwards Memorial, University Place, Washington on Monday February 11th, 2019 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Burial with military honors will be held on Tuesday, February 12th, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tacoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
